CO₂ savings occur when you do not use the car; instead you walk, ride a bicycle or use public transport.
How Savings Are Calculated
In principle, with every kilometer of walking and cycling you save the CO₂ emission of a kilometer driven by car.
However, not all distances can replace car journeys. This includes the distances covered at home, in the office or during sports.
Adjustment Factors
Through our own data evaluations and surveys we have found that:
- About 40% of walking routes cannot replace car journeys
- About 20% of bicycle routes cannot replace car journeys
To solve this problem, we leave the distance in your account, but reduce the CO₂ savings accordingly:
- Walking: CO₂ savings reduced by 40%
- Cycling: CO₂ savings reduced by 20%
In this way we achieve an overall correct CO₂ balance, even if it may vary somewhat for individuals. If the values we assume change, we will adjust them accordingly.
